Sun flirting with Open Source and Open Standards

Two interesting tidbits of news on slashdot this morning. Both happen to be somewhat related to Sun Microsystems, but come from different departments and are not related to each other:
"The Open Office XML Format Will Probably Become an ISO Standard" and "The Case for Open Source/Closed Standards".

Itanium 2 storms the benchmarking world

Looks like HP answered my secret prayers and published some SPEC results for the upcoming Itanium 2. I think that this marks Intel's entry into the workstation market. All that I hope is that they actually encounter some form of competition...

Benchmarks return - with a vengeance

Where JBQ gets really tired and writes something totally meaningless. He talks about cars and computers, SPEC benchmarks and how (not) realistic they are. He doesn't even bash Apple because it isn't funny to bash an easy target.

Ahhhhh, benchmarks. An easy way to see if people say the truth or not when they speak about the respective speeds of their CPUs. I like to see what people say, and compare that to SPECCPU2000 results. The differences are sometimes very surprising. Well, are they so surprising?
